Archaeological excavations confirm that Naftalan was one of the ancient settlements. The city of Naftalan, famous for its unique natural healing Naftalan oil, will attract attention not only with its natural resources but also with its archeological monuments. Archaeological research in the city of Naftalan, which has great tourism potential, is very important in terms of research and promotion of our monuments. This will be of interest to tourists coming to our city for treatment. In particular, the existence of large mounds around Naftalan, which are rare in the world, makes it necessary to study these mounds and preserve them as a surface museum. During the archeological excavations conducted by the head of the Naftalan archeological expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS, Doctor of Philosophy in History, Associate Professor Muzaffar Huseynov, a multi-layered settlement was discovered in Gashalti-Garagoyunlu village of Naftalan city, which proves the antiquity of this place. The total area of the hill where the settlement is located is about 5 ha, and its height is more than 10 meters. The habitat covers almost the entire area of the hill. The main layer of the monument belongs to the Eneolithic period. The thickness of the cultural layer of this period is more than 2 meters. Remains of a 5th-millennium oval, circular raw brick building, drilled houses, pottery and stone tools were found in the Eneolithic stratum. We are witnessing the laying of earthen graves on the site in the Late Bronze-Early Iron Age, and pit graves in antiquity. In the central and north-western part of the monument, on the Eneolithic layer, there was a settlement in the Middle Ages. Remains of buildings, pottery, hearths, ovens, household wells, rich pottery made in a glazed and simple way were found in the cultural layer of the Middle Ages. The habitat attracts attention due to its favorable natural-geographical location and the size of the area. Carrying out such archeological excavations and discovering ancient monuments will contribute to the synthesis of archeological tourism and medical tourism. The head of the Naftalan City Executive Power Vugar Novruzov inspected the area where the multi-storey residential area was found.
